SCANNING GUIDE
How to scan trading cards accurately
Most failed card scans are caused by glare, cropped edges, motion blur, or unreadable collector details. A few simple adjustments can improve recognition before you try a second time.
01
1. Use even, indirect light
Place the card near a window or use soft lamps from the sides. Avoid a bright bulb directly above the card, especially for holofoil surfaces and glossy sleeves.
02
2. Keep every edge in frame
The full border helps the scanner understand orientation and prevents important lower-edge details from being cropped. Hold the phone parallel to the card.
03
3. Make text readable
Tap to focus if your device allows it. The card name, collector number, set code, and rarity details are often more useful than artwork for separating similar printings.
- Clean the camera lens
- Hold still while capturing
- Remove glare-producing outer sleeves when safe
- Scan one card at a time
04
4. Review before saving
Compare the result with the physical card. If the set, number, language, rarity, or printing is wrong, adjust the light and scan again rather than saving an uncertain record.
QUESTIONS
What collectors ask
What background works best?
A plain, contrasting, non-reflective background makes card edges easier to see.
Should I remove the card from its sleeve?
Only when safe. Start with the sleeve on; remove an outer sleeve if reflections prevent readable details.
Why is my card blurry?
Clean the lens, add light, increase distance slightly, tap to focus, and keep the phone still.
